Bisquick Chocolate Chip Scones

Homemade scones can be intimidating. Finding the perfect balance between crunchy, crumbly, flaky, and moist can be challenging.

Luckily, Bisquick makes the whole process easier. They taste just like 100% from scratch scones, and no one has to know how effortless they are.

Crisp and golden brown on the outside, Bisquick scones are tender, flaky, and supremely buttery inside.

They’re the kind of baked goods that make it impossible to eat just one. And since the short ingredient list won’t break your budget, you can!

Indulge guilt-free in these whenever you want. (Budgetary guilt-free. Not diet-friendly guilt-free!)

The Difference Between Scones and Biscuits

Scones are a British baked good that’s similar to biscuits. But they’re also not exactly the same.

Where biscuits are flaky and buttery, scones are crunchier and crumblier.

This is because biscuits contain more butter. Scones, on the other hand, use cream.

Bisquick Scones Ingredients

Ingredients

Thanks to the Bisquick, you’ll need only six ingredients for this recipe. They are:

  • Original Bisquick mix. Bisquick is the shortcut that makes everything easier. It prevents having to make the scones from scratch.
  • Semi-Sweet chocolate chips. I like to use semi-sweet because I don’t like my scones to be too sweet. You can use whatever type you like best.
  • Heavy whipping cream. The cream gives the scones a moist and crumbly texture.
  • Granulated sugar. For a bit of added sweetness.
  • Egg. The binder that ties the ingredients together.
  • Vanilla. For that warm, rich depth of flavor.

How to Make Bisquick Scones

Follow these steps to make your Bisquick scones:

1. Make the dough. Combine the Bisquick, chocolate chips, cream, sugar, egg, and vanilla in a large bowl. Mix with your hands until a dough is formed.

For this step, be very careful not to over-work the dough, as this will cause dry scones. Stop mixing as the ingredients come together.

2. Form the dough. Shape it into a thick, 8-inch circle and flatten it a little. Dip a knife in flour and use it to make 8 equal wedges.

Don’t slice all the way through, though! You’ll want to bake the dough as a whole scone.

3. Chill the dough. Cold dough results in flaky, buttery scones. Just 15 minutes in the fridge is enough.

4. Add the finish. Brush the dough with cream and sugar to give the scones a gorgeous golden-brown hue.

5. Bake. They’ll need about 12 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

6. Enjoy! Divide the scones into wedges, serve, and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Scones

A few final tips to remember:

  • Mix by hand. Over-worked dough = tough and chewy scones. So, combine the ingredients with your hands to prevent over-mixing. Lumps are okay!
  • Use cold ingredients. Unlike other baked goods that call for room temperature dairy, you’ll use cold cream and eggs for scones. That’s what gives them their flaky texture.
  • Chill the dough. Chilling the prepared dough for at least 15 minutes also helps. Overnight is best.
  • Dust your work surface with flour. Doing so will keep the dough from sticking.
  • Top with butter. Brush the baked scones with melted butter for a glossy finish.
  • Serve them warm. Scones are best served fresh. So bake them just minutes before you intend to serve them. If you want to prepare them ahead of time, you can make the dough, wrap it in plastic, and refrigerate it overnight.

Recipe Variations

Scones are pretty versatile, and there’s a lot of ways to make them your own. Here are some ideas.

  • Vary the chocolate chips. Use white, milk, or dark instead of semi-sweet.
  • Add berries. Dot the dough with your favorite berries. Blueberries, strawberries, (dried) cranberries – you name it.
  • Mix in some fruit. Mashed fruits like bananas, peaches, and pureed apples also make great additions. They provide extra flavor and moisture.
  • Use flavor add-ins. Enhance the scones’ flavor with zests and extracts. Orange, vanilla, almond, and lemon all work well.
  • Add nuts. Give the scones a nutty, crunchy contrast with pecans, walnuts, or pistachios.
  • Spice them up. Give the scones a layer of warmth with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, or cardamom.

How to Store Scones

As I said, scones are best served fresh from the oven, so I don’t recommend leftovers.

If you can’t help it, though, here’s how to store them:

  • To store. Transfer the scones to an airtight container. Leave them at room temperature and consume within 1 to 2 days.
  • To freeze. Place the scones in a freezer-safe container and freeze for 1 to 2 months.
  • To thaw. Let frozen scones thaw in the fridge overnight or at room temperature for 1-2 hours before serving. Reheat in the oven until warm.

Can I Freeze the Dough?

You can freeze uncooked scone dough. Just wrap it in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer-safe container.

You can either defrost the dough in the fridge overnight before baking or bake it straight from the freezer.

Just add a few minutes to the total baking time to compensate.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups original Bisquick mix

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • 1/3 cup cold heavy whipping cream, plus more for garnish

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, plus more for garnish

  • 1 cold egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a cookie sheet with non-stick spray or shortening or line it with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, combine the Bisquick mix, chocolate chips, whipping cream, sugar, egg, and vanilla until a smooth dough forms.
  • Form the dough into an 8-inch circle and place it on the cookie sheet. Brush it with whipping cream and sprinkle with sugar.
  • Coat a knife with flour and use it to cut the dough into 8 equal wedges, without slicing all the way through. (The entire dough will bake as one large scone.)
  • Bake until golden brown, about 12 minutes. Let the scones cool slightly for 5 minutes, then transfer them onto a cooling rack. Divide into 8 wedges. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • It’s important that you use cold ingredients, not room temperature ones. That’s what gives the scones their flaky texture.

  1. My husband is English and said these were really good and very close to what he gets at the bakery back home. I'm trying these next with raspberries. 🙂
